DC Road Trip: Weekend in Historic Williamsburg

By now, Ashley and I have mastered the short road trips from DC while working remotely. Our visit to Virginia’s Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown was no different. Just a 2.5 hour drive from DC, this was a perfect short getaway and was definitely a crowd pleaser for a history nerd and museum nerd. Bonus: Williamsburg is in Publix country so we treated ourselves to Pub subs in honor of our Florida roots.

A highlight for me was definitely the museum at the Jamestown settlement. The curators and team at the museum did an excellent job designing the main exhibit halls and included a wide range of perspectives on the history of the settlement, specifically highlighting three groups: British, Native, and Angolan. Rather than offer up an imagined version of history, the museum’s narrative centered on artifacts, oral history, and written resources - and most importantly, noted when it wasn’t possible to actually know a piece of the history given the information available.

Note: I accompanied Ashley on this sponsored trip through Visit Williamsburg. The above are my own opinions on our activities, and I was simply along for the ride as Ashley’s photographer. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite snaps from the trip! For more information on our itinerary and the Historic Triangle, check out Ashley’s blog History in High Heels.
